Looking for a bit of feedback here guys:
As most of you know I'm working in web development this year, and I've learned loads, and now I want to redevelop the main site (the one that never got finished) into something that might be useful for the 'train community (if you can call us that)
the idea so far is that as members you could host pictures there, either for use on the forums or linking to anywhere else, and hold them as albums etc with comments (much like you can on facebook/flickr, and to a less functional extent myspazz.
also allow members to have blogs etc and somehow try and tie this into the forum (a forum thread based on a blog post etc)
i'd even gone so far as to possibly make each user a homepage where they can view their albums, other peoples albums and even load up news headlines, feeds form their favourite blogs etc (if anyone has a windows live account or uses google personalised home you'll know what i mean here)
do you think any of this would get used, even a little bit? can you think of anything else you'd want from the site? would you rather i just fucked off?
eventually alot of what i implement will hopefully get used in my final years dissertation (still waiting for approval on my idea though) so throwing ideas at me is encouraged, make me think dammit!
cheers!

cheers gaz, i was thinking of the forum posts from blogposts idea in the way that Punktastic (link) make threads from all of their news announcements, but as you say this could easily get very bogged down if alot of people start posting, I'll have to have a think about this, maybe just use a regular comments feature but in a forum style like slashdot (link) do

hopefully (if i can figure it out) itll be ajax based like a google home page, so you can layout your own newsfeeds etc, and also include some kind of style sheet switcher, either with a bunch of official styles to choose from, or to allow user style sheets, i dont want it to end up like myspazz though, where people can create pages that are useless and crash and make the site as a whole look crap....
a games section, good shout!

based on a facebook formatt as that, out of all the other personal friends sites seems the most user firnedly and has the most functions, with blogspot additions plus the personal home page....and with a bit of a smurftrain 'twist' sounds a cracking idea.

cheers bob! your both really getting me thinking on this now, i need to get some hosting sorted so i can start implementing some ideas!
I still use the original theme, but the other one looks ghey on this monitor (brightness and contrast mean nothing to it)
the site will most likely be implemented in stages, uploads and personal albums coming first, and rss feeds and friends systems set up afterwards hopefully.
Im going to try and get it polished to (as near as possible) the standard of a marketable application, if only so it looks good in a portfolio.

what do we think as a homepage layout? i wanted something simple and easily adaptable, i think this should fit both.

yeah ive done them on a couple of sites at work and like using them, its a bit of a running joke at work, shadows, bevel and emboss (if anyone uses that they're fired) and reflections...
toying with the idea of google ads, attempting to cover costs, and eventually id like to open the site up to anyone to join so hosting could get steep

oh, why dont u animate all the page links (in flash maybe if thats the right thing)
instead of just opening a page with standard way, why nopt use clever fades and slides, u knw what i mean.

i was thinking about using flash (so i can learn flash mostly) but i tend to shy away from it in sites i make, mostly because it over complicates things for not much in return alot of the time, ill definately look into it htough
